THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA - A New Era of Digital Beauty

In this age, social media is a blessing and a curse - a double-edged sword.  With so many applications with millions of users, anybody has the power to be seen.   Even now, with precautious safety measures, privacy is still a big issue.  But could this be a good thing?

IMG Models, one of the top leading modelling agencies in the world has been recruiting new clients via social media.  The company started this recruitment method at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, in the month of April 2020.  Because international travel was at a halt for several weeks, recruiters were unable to broaden their horizons in looking for newfound faces.  But, thanks to the worldwide digital phenomenon, TikTok made this no problem in their work.  Agents have the ability to seek a variety of looks just by scrolling through the For You Page feature until they find somebody that catches their eye.  Not only is this extremely convenient, but they could be from any country - Consequently, helping expand their brand.

Jeni Rose, IMG senior vice president states in a Fashionista article, "You get to see a lot of personality. When you're looking at a video it's so different [than a picture]."  Compared to a professional headshot, there is almost a fabricated ambiance; whereas, in a video, the people present themselves settled; unedged by their natural characteristics.  When an agent finds someone on TikTok, they will be contacted on Instagram by a verified account.  If the contactee is interested in the position, online meetings of details will be held, where both the potential client and their parent (if underage) are able to discuss documents and components of the job.

It seems so outlandish that a girl in her room dancing mindlessly could turn into the face of New York Fashion Week by the grace of technology and fate.  In some ways, it is fascinating and unbelievable, while in other lenses, the sound of it is overbearing and toxic.  Is it just to convert unknowing adolescents into products of admiration and jealousy?  Is it safe to put a minor in such a competitive industry?

The topic brings a complex conversation - But there is no denying the fact that these binary algorithms are adhering to the human experience in no way they have ever been before.
